Patients and Consumers

Plastic surgery involves many choices. The first and most important is selecting a surgeon you can trust. Choosing an ASPS Member Surgeon ensures that you have selected a physician who:

  • Has at least 6 years of surgical training and experience, with a minimum of 3 years in plastic surgery.

  • Is trained and experienced in all plastic surgery procedures, including breast, body, face and reconstruction.

  • Operates only in accredited medical facilities.

  • Adheres to a strict code of ethics.

  • Fulfills continuing medical education requirements, including standards and innovations in patient safety.

  • Is board certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery or in Canada by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada®. (ASPS)

Besides adhering to the above noted criteria when choosing your plastic surgeon you should also consider the following:

  • Ask your surgeon questions about the procedure(s) you are considering. They should be willing to answer and educate you about the procedure(s) you are contemplating.

  • You may want to see before and after photographs of your surgeons work. These photos are usually available on your prospective surgeons website. You must remember that these are just examples of the surgeons work and may not reflect your actual result.

  • Have realistic expectations prior to your initial consultation. It is often helpful to make a list of motivations that made you consider a plastic surgical procedure. Your surgeon can help you make sure that your pre surgical expectations are met.

  • Most of all, you should feel comfortable with the Board Certified Plastic Surgeon that you have chosen. Your procedure(s) will often require several follow up visits with your surgeon and their staff.
